Project Description

We are celebrating the Music Venue Trust Venues Day 2026 by spotlighting a local venue close to our hearts: The Junction in Plymouth. It has been almost a year since we installed an upgraded PA System for The Junction, and we thought now would be a good time to look back on the process.

The Music Venue Trust is a charity doing crucial work supporting Grassroots Music Venues for the benefit of the venues, communities and upcoming artists. These venues are vital for keeping the live events industry alive, creating spaces for artists to share their passion with their fans and meeting new audiences. Their aim is to have Grassroots Music Venues to be recognised for their important role within the cultural and economic parts of the community, as they are often treated unfairly by governments compared to other cultural venues within an area.

The Junction is a local venue with a capacity of 235, that regularly hosts a variety of local and touring bands on Mutley Plain. After COVID, the venue decided that they wanted to increase the number of live touring bands they hosted, moving from a pub that put-on gigs to a live music venue. As their focus moved, they realized they needed a more up to date system to attract touring bands and provide a better sounding event for the audience. They also were having issues with intelligibility for those who stood at the bar, which they were looking to improve.

We designed a new system for them, taking in the venues’ needs, goals they wanted to achieve, and budget restraints. The final design included Martin Audio’s THS Three Way Tri-axial point source top boxes, SXC118 cardioid subwoofers and FP6 coaxial point source delays. As a Martin Audio partner, we utilised our knowledge and experience of the entire product range to design and implement a high quality, great value, rider friendly venue audio system which met the needs of both in-house engineers and touring bands. It also means we could provide a fast response for any issues or questions that arose. Once the equipment was delivered, Nub supported the in-house team with the installation and tuning of the system ensuring ease of use and reliability.

Since the installation the venue has received numerous comments on the improvement of sound quality within the space, even from those they wouldn’t expect to notice. All the in-house and visiting engineers have expressed how nice it is to have such a professional system within The Junction, with them finding it surprisingly easy to control the sub and vocals levels in the already challenging room. When asked for feedback from the installation the in-house engineer cited that Nub’s ‘customer service and support are phenomenal and the people who work there are just great!’.

Supporting and fostering a good relationship with local venues is extremely important to us, as they are key to keeping the industry alive and cultivating new talent. We value the experiences of our customers, with the aim of installations to fulfil their brief with a system that is also user friendly.
